Shade Systems Make (previously NuRange Products) is a New Zealand family-owned business whose roots stretch back 80 years, to before WWII. We are proud to have been trading commercially in the shade and shelter industry for over 50 years, and are now in our 3rd generation of family ownership and management.
Our founder, Mr S.R. Suckling, worked most of his life in the canvas trade, including running a large team of men manufacturing army tents for the government’s war effort. In 1964 he decided to start his own business – S.R. Suckling Canvas goods and manufacturing. He handed this business down to his sons in 1976 and in 1985 we began marketing and selling our products throughout New Zealand.
In the 1997, the company was rebranded as ‘Shade Systems’, and began making sail and shade structures exclusively. This move saw the company expand significantly. A new, purpose-built factory was built in Dargaville and more, highly skilled staff were hired.
In 2005, D.R. Suckling took over management and under his leadership the idea of Covered Outdoor Learning Areas (COLA Canopies) was developed. This concept was a game changer for our business and allowed us to add real value to school playgrounds nationwide. The first COLA Canopy was installed at Whangarei Primary School in 2007 and in 2008 the PVC Tensile Membrane roofing concept was created.
